Herzlich Willkommen

Greetings to all singers, delegates, and guests,

The Utica Männerchor is is honored and proud to host the 35^th Sängerfest and welcome you to Utica as we celebrate our German heritage. We are working diligently to make the weekend successful and enjoyable for all participants.

Our goal is to continue promoting and advancing German culture and tradition through music and song while maintaining the high standards of previous Sängerfeste.

Festdirigent
David Kolb

David Kolb has been the choral director for the Utica Männerchor since January 2008. A native of the Utica area, David attended Hamilton College, where he double-majored in music and mathematics. While a student at Hamilton, David had the opportunity to direct a small choir for Sunday morning chapel services, and later he directed the choir at Stone Presbyterian Church in Clinton. An active performer, David has starred in several community theater productions and has been employed as a professional soloist. He also continues to lead Taizé worship services at Stone Presbyterian Church, for which he sings and plays the violin. When not involved with music, David works as a math tutor and has taught mathematics at Mohawk Valley Community College.

David has been blessed with strong musical roots. His father, G. Roberts Kolb, is Professor of Music and Director of Choral Music at Hamilton College, while his mother, Lauralyn Kolb, is a professional voice teacher and soprano soloist. David is excited to have the chance to share his musical gifts at Sängerfest 2009.

Excerpts from the recent Bundes Music Committee Meeting 26 April 2009.

Mass Chorus Concert and Prize Singing Venue : After considerable searching, the venue selected is the Whitesboro Central High School on Route 291 in Marcy, NY. It is located about three miles west of the Utica Maennerchor. Maps are available, click on "Utica Maps" above.

Rehearsal for the Mass Chorus Concert will be in the seats of the auditorium and at the end of rehearsal we will go on stage to find our places. Gail also needs to know the number chairs required by your singers and in which voice section for the Mass Chorus Concert.

Note: please advise your singers that the risers do not have a rail on the back of the top row. If they cannot stand comfortably for the entire performance, they should choose another level (stage floor and 3-tiered riser).

Sängerfest Schedule: To accommodate registrations, meals, and rehearsal, slight changes have been made to the schedule, click on "Schedule" above. The Sauerbraten dinner (Reservation Only) on Friday will be available at the Utica Maennerchor starting at 4:30 pm. Rehearsal at the Whitesboro Central High School is planned for 6 pm. Click on "Order Forms" above for reservation form.

Restaurants: There is a fine restaurant in Hotel Utica, as well as in the immediate neighborhood. A German restaurant, the Balken, which is operated by the folks from the Heidelberg Bakery, is less than 2 miles from the hotel. The hotel includes a continental breakfast each morning. Church and restaurant information will be included in your arrival packet.

Sängerfest Prize Sings Competition: Two rehearsal rooms will be available on Saturday. The choruses may perform their songs in any order and key. Your choices of music order selection and key changes must be reported to Gail by the BMC meeting on Friday June 12th.

Sitting while performing in Prize Singing is acceptable and encouraged for those who need to do so. The adjudicators will be advised not to deduct points nor penalize for this. Gail also needs to know the number chairs required by your singers and in which voice section for the and Prize Singing competition.

Eligibility: To perform on stage in Prize Singing each participant is required to have a badge and the tax for each singer participating must be paid to be eligible.

To Do Check-List:

• Ensure your vereine has made your hotel reservations
  
• Please bring any trophies still outstanding to the Sängerfest
  
• Ads, Patron, and Booster list should be submitted
  
• Badge list and payment are now over due, submit outstanding payments asap
  
• Badges for kinderchor singers is half price ($45.00)
  
• Sauerbraten dinner reservations must be submitted by mid May
  
• Bring copies of the following songs for Sunday activities:
  
  • Kein schöner Land No Land More Beautiful (Damenchor)
    
  • Das ist der Tag des Herrn This is the Day of the Lord (Männerchor)
    
  • So ein Tag Such a Day (Gemischterchor)
