President's Message

         Dear Members & Friends,

After a long summer of travel, recreation, and leisure, including a trip to Cape Cod, we come together again with a renewed determination to foster and promote our cultural heritage, rich in the tradition of music and song.

Preparations for our 139th Liederabend on November 17th, under the guidance of our Dirigent Jerry Hoch, are coming along very well. We are putting the final touches on our concert program; one more rehearsal and it's Showtime.

Also coming soon is the annual election. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the officers and committee chairs for their hard work, dedication, and commitment. Also, all the work-teams and all the members who have kept their promises to uphold the traditions and culture of the Kingston Maennerchor and Damenchor so it could continue to flourish and prosper. I am very proud to have worked with you all this past year to keep us in the forefront of the City of Kingston and the State of New York cultural awareness.

Most of the incumbents are willing to continue their commitment to the Chor, however two will step down after many years of dedicated service and support. I would like to offer them an Aussergewöhnlich! Vielen Dank! for all their efforts.

Monika Kaufmann is a past Vice President and current Financial Secretary. Over the past few years she has endured and exceptional amount of physical and emotional stress and yet has always shown us a smile, a good heart, and has become an inspiration to her family and friends. Monika is a fighter; she does not allow negativism to interfere with her life's work or ambition. The next time you feel low or unappreciated, send Monika a card or give her a call to thank her for her inspiration, motivation, and stimulation of her positive thinking towards life. We thank her for all her devotion and wish her a speedy recovery and return to our chor.

I once called Franz Heigemeir a Renaissance Man. He is a singer, calligrapher, graphic designer, artist, painter, woodcarver, sculptor, musician, and songwriter. He has held many offices including Trustee and for the past six years, Liedervater. Franz would like to devote more of his time to his oils and stained glass. We thank him with a well done and wish him pure joy in his art.

Monika and Franz may now finally sidestep the heavy lifting, but we know they will continue to offer us good advice, guidance, and counseling whenever it is sought and in their usual friendly and courteous manner.

As you know, our many activities throughout the year are designed to help educate and enlighten our community in cultural German heritage and tradition. I would like to ask our newer members to follow Monika and Franz's example and offer their skills to help continue and further advance our chorus in our endeavors to preserve and promote German culture, heritage, and tradition through music and song.

There are many exciting events scheduled for the rest of 2007: the Liederabend on 11/17, the Children's Christmas Party with Santa and his friends on 12/02, and the very reflective and inspiring German Christmas Church Service on 12/16.

Please check your calendars and make a commitment to support your Germanic culture, heritage, and tradition by coming to our activities and events. You'll find good times, eine tolle Zeit mit Gemütlichkeit und viel Spass!

Mit freundlichen Sängergrüßen und Kameradschaft,
With friendly Singers' Greetings and Camaraderie

Hermann Alfons Koelmel, Präsident

Wir grüßen Sie mit Herz und Hand, Die Sänger von dem Hudsonstrand
We greet you with heart and hand, the singers from the Hudson Strand

An American in Deutschland

Leben in Stimpfach

My name is Kate Wilsey. I am 18 years old and am a 2007 graduate from Onteora High School. Having received a (Congress- Bundestag ) scholarship from the organization of AFS, I am currently studying at the Albert Schweitzer University in Crailsheim, Germany.

I live in the small rural village of Stimpfach in the Bundes Land of Baden-Wuttemberg. My host family is extremely nice and very accommodating. I have an older host brother Bernd, whom I have not yet met. He returns home in December from a year abroad in Australia. My host sisters, Irina, and Heike, are both a lot of fun to be around and are very nice. I attend the same school as Heike, but am in a different class. My classmates are very friendly and school becomes easier each day, with regards to understanding the language and my schedule. I find the school system to be very different. I am not used to going home at one o'clock! We have gym only once a week in which males and females are separated. There are no lockers and we don't eat in a cafeteria for lunch. Our classrooms are in different buildings, therefore after each class we have to put our winter jackets back on to go outside. When a teacher is sick or can't come in, instead of having a substitute teacher, we have the class period free. There are also no after school activities which I find to be a definite challenge. I have come to realize that Germans have an abundance of free time, which at first was hard to adjust to. This experience has enabled me to see how busy American High School students actually are. I'm not saying it is better or worse, just different!

To occupy some of my free time I have joined a dance class, orchestra and soccer team. They are all a lot of fun and allow me to interact and form relationships. My soccer team plays outside under the lights from 7 pm till 9 pm year round. So yes, we are currently `layering up'! As in most activities I can't always understand everything the coach is saying, but can usually figure it out by simply observing.

With regards to German food, my family, as do most, eat a lot of bread, cheese and wurst! We eat our warm meals at lunch time instead of dinner time. This has been hard for me to get accustomed to. There is also never any food left on a plate, even the crumbs are eaten! They are not wasteful and separate all of their garbage, which was confusing the first couple of days. Compared to the American diet, Germans don't eat very big meals but rather munch throughout the day. Here we have breakfast, a morning snack, a warm lunch, cookies, cake and coffee in the afternoon and then dinner. When we go grocery shopping we buy only what we NEED. I have yet to see someone leave a grocery store with more than three bags full, which by the way you bring your own sacks to the store, so you don't have to pay for them. I am having a hard time erasing the image of the Sam's Club shopper from my mind.

I have also noticed that literally all of the cars and buses are either an Audi or BMW. Many people ride their bikes, and our school even has a 'bike lot'. Something you would not see in the USA.

I am enjoying my time here both learning and observing the cultural differences. I have already learned so much about the German lifestyle and culture. Our fall break is next week and I hope to do some travelling with my guest family. I look forward to the many more adventures that lie ahead! Thank you for your support, and continued consideration. Best of luck with your 2008 Scholarship Program fund raising. Your efforts are appreciated very much. I'm sure that the 139th Liederabend on November 17th will be an enjoyable and successful evening for all. Machts gut! Tschus!

Team Work

If you have any thought of "applying" or "doing," please contact a Team Leader, Officer, Committee Chair or our Team Coordinator Robert Rossler. Many talents are needed from volunteers, including helping on events, bartending, maintenance of the property and building, Kinderchor and Jugendchor, and so on. We know it's late autumn by the chill in the air, so I suppose most of us must apply our hands to our rakes and do the annual raking of the leaves. But Goethe certainly had deeper meaning with his words. If we just think (or talk) about what we must do, who, then, will do what must be done? The "other guy?" Or each and every one of us who care about the continued success of our organization? For further information about how you can help, contact the hall or the team leaders listed below:

Praise the Lord!   Good News.   We were blessed not to have any of our members pass since our last newsletter. We will keep all those who lead the way in German Singing, Culture, and Heritage in our hearts and souls, always.

INTRODUCING . . . . .

by Doris Vogt & Christa Scheitz

We hope you will take the time to extend a hand of friendship to our new members. Welcome to you all.

Alberta Cozza
Alberta was proposed for membership by Ruth Miller and Walter Bruchholz. She was accepted on August 8, 2007. Alberta was born and raised in Kingston and still resides here. She graduated from Kings H.S. in 1948. She and her Husband Ernie raised 5 children. Sadly Ernie is deceased. One of Alberta's sons is in the Bowling Hall of Fame and her great-grandson, who is only 6 years old, already is an accomplished bowler, getting his name in the local paper. He has been bowling for two years.

Alberta has worn many hats in the employment field. She worked at Hercules Powder Co., worked in Penny's, Wal-Mart and Adams, plus for a time, she did housecleaning for her family.

I don't know how they had the time (having 5 children) but Alberta and her husband were musicians for 30 years. Alberta played the accordion and organ, her husband the guitar and her daughter sang. They played at the Moose Hall, the Hillside and almost all of the local firehouses. They also volunteered at senior functions playing for an hour or more. They became well known at these functions and well loved. Alberta also was no stranger to the Maennerchor - having played for anniversary parties, etc. at the club and has also attended many of our dances. Welcome Alberta!

Jefferson Davis
Jeff was proposed for membership by Walter Vogt and Herman Koelmel. He was accepted on September 12, 2007. He is a willing worker. Jeff is no stranger to the "Club". His Opa, Willy Harms, and his Aunt, Annemarie sang with the Chor and Annemarie is still very active. Oma Elizabeth has always been a loyal supporter too.

Jeff was born in Kingston but he graduated from Saugerties High School in 1985. He now lives in Clifton Park, NY. He joined the NY Air National Guard in Scotia, NY. He has been active for 15 years, including five years in the US Air Force. He is an aircraft mechanic and was recently promoted to the rank of Senior Master Sergeant. On October 14, 2007 Jeff was deployed to McMurdl Station in Antarctica and will be gone for 8 weeks.

Jeff is an all-around guy. He loves to boat on the Hudson and tour the Adirondacks on his motorcycle. He belongs to a sportsman club in Clifton Park and enjoys target practice. The club teaches hunter safety and also holds fund raisers to give back to the community.

As I said before, Jeff is no stranger to the Club. He has gone on several trips to Germany with our group and again has proved to be willing worker, unloading buses, and carrying suitcases up and down the stairs at the various hotels. Many German hotels do not have elevators, so many of us "old folks" really appreciated having Jeff's help and especially his good nature about all the work. Welcome Jeff! We know you will be real asset to the Kingston Maennerchor and Damenchor.

Michael and Clifford Maroney
Michael and Cliff were proposed for membership by Walter Vogt. They were accepted on August 8, 2007; Mike joining as a singer and worker and Cliff joining as a supporting member. Mike is no stranger to the "Club". His parents, Bruce and Doris, were members for many years. Doris sang with the "Chor", probably close to 25 years. They both were willing workers, sadly Doris is deceased.

Mike and his two sisters were born in Frankfurt, Germany. His dad was stationed in Germany while serving in the U.S. Army. He met and married Doris there, coming back to the States when Mike was about 3 years old. They lived in Port Ewen, NY and Mike and his family still live there, just a hop and a skip and jump away from his father's house. Mike and Jacqueline have been married for 19 years and have two sons; Clifford, who is 17 and Michael, who is 15.

Michael has been employed in retailing for 25 years. He worked at Potter Brothers Ski and Patio Store and now is employed at Herzog's True Value Home Center in the paint department. This is a busy man, folks. He has been attending Ulster County Community College for 2 years, studying psychology and elementary education. He needs one more semester to be able to teach at the elementary level. Michael also is a National Certified Soccer Coach and Referee. He has been doing this for 30 years. He enjoys soccer and taking good care of his family. Mike does not belong to any other clubs, so thank you Mike, for choosing the Kingston Maennerchor und Damenchor. I'm sure your Mom is smiling down on you for that and for being a great husband and father.

Cliff
As I said before, Cliff joined at the same time as his dad. Cliff is 17 years old and a senior at Kingston High School. Cliff joined as a supporting member. At school, Cliff plays bass clarinet in the 215 member KHS Band. On October 28th Cliff participated with the band in the Vestal Show Competition. On October 29th they traveled to Syracuse to participate in the New York State Field Band Conference 40 States Band Championship.

Cliff enjoys soccer also. He has played in Olympic Division Soccer for the Hudson Valley. After graduation, Cliff will be going to UCCC for two years, transferring hopefully to Boston University. He has not really decided on a major yet. Cliff enjoys music, getting together with some friends and forming a small band, playing base guitar. Welcome to the "Club" Cliff and we wish you the best in your future endeavors.

Editors Note: Each year the Kingston High School Brass Ensemble, a smaller contingent of the high school band, performs at our German Christmas Church Service. Come join us again this year to hear the fine music played by this distinguished young group.

Edward A. Zeboris and Julia Dennison-Zeboris
Edward and Julia were proposed for membership by good friends, Mickey Heilemann and Edgar Brown. They were accepted October 10, 2007, Ed joining at a worker and July as a supporting member.

Ed was born in Johnson City, NY and graduated from Binghampton Central H.S.. He also graduated from UCCC with an associate degree. He as a U.S. Marine for 3 years, stationed at Camp Lejeune, N.C. An interesting note, Ed was sent to Lebanon when General Eisenhower was President. After the service, Ed became a N.Y. State Trooper and Investigator for 23 years. Retiring from the State Police, he became a supervisor for the U.S. Postal Service, doing that for 17 years and then was a Post Master at Rhinecliff, NY. I think he has earned a well deserved retirement. Ed belongs to the NRA, Morgan Hill Game Association, Marine Corp. League, Ulster Det., and the VFW. He enjoys hunting and target shooting. He also collects military memorabilia. He has one son from a previous marriage who is a union electrician. P.S. If you want to hear a funny joke, just ask Ed.

Julia and Ed have been married for 19 years. They do not have children together. Julia was born in Catskill, NY and moved to Kingston and graduated from Kingston High School. She worked as a manager at Key Bank, retiring in May 2007. However, in September 2007, she returned as a part-time teller, which she enjoys. Julia, is also a member of the NRA, the Mid Hudson Wine Society, and the Hurley Heritage Society. Ed and Julia live in Hurley, NY. Julia enjoys nature, wildlife and wildlife photography. Welcome to both!

FROM THE ARCHIVES

Hildegard Edling, Historian/Archivist

As the Kingston Maennerchor & Damenchor approaches its 140th anniversary in spring of 2008 it is only fitting that we come to the end of this series on the building and move to Greenkill Avenue. The dedication of the hall occurred sixty-seven years ago in February of 1940. The optimism felt at the time of the dedication was soon to be tempered by the involvement of the United States in World War II. During the war, membership floundered and real progress and growth wasn't seen until approximately 1948.

Mannerchor Club Dedicates Hall

The Rondout Social Mannerchor dedicated its new hall on Greenkill Avenue Sunday with a banquet and program attended by members and their ladies, who heard several prominent speakers on topics concerning the organization.

Charles Corson, the toastmaster of the occasion, expressed extreme joy that the Mannerchor now has its own hall after 72 years of existence. Fred Scholl, the treasurer for 20 years, said that with the new hall, the members have an inspiration to progress. Mr. Scholl was very optimistic about the future of the club. "We have a place to work with," said he, "and this fact makes the members more anxious than ever to work for the club, and get some joy out of it."

Mrs. Corson, president of the Ladies' Auxiliary, in her speech said "It's as much our home as it is the men's and with the help of God and the cooperation of the members we cannot fail."

James H. Schoonmaker, builder of the hall, spoke on the various features of the building.

Members from the Germania Society of Poughkeepsie were guests, among them Ernest Bauer, formerly of the Mannerchor; Treasurer Held, Mrs. Held and Mrs. Vanderbilt, former president of the Germania Auxiliary.

After Fred Sudheimer, oldest member of the Mannerchor spoke, there was a program of songs and dancing to the tunes of the Marionettes.

Editor's Note: The above article is in its original format, with no changes, as printed in the Freeman probably February 4, 1940. I cannot tell from the archival material whether the dedication or the date of the newspaper article is February 4.

TALENT CORNER

by Hildegard Edling

Congratulations to our treasurer Joan Arena who won second place at the Dutchess County Fair this past August for her stained glass entry "Waterlily". For those of you who don't know, Joan is quite a talented lady outside the financial realm and is proficient in elaborate cross stitch embroidery and folk art painting.

The cover article in the Summer 2007 ABOUT TOWN Community Guide to Rhinebeck, Red Hook, Tivoli & Hudson was titled "A Neighborhood of Animal Farms" and featured member Bernhard Scholldorf and his son Bentley both in photo and in word. Bernhard came to the United States to work on his Uncle Karl's farm in 1952 when there were 287 dairy farms in Dutchess County. By 2002 (the latest figures quoted in the article) there were just 34 with the Scholldorf farm being one of them. The Scholldorf s milk 45 Holstein cows twice daily on the last dairy farm in Rhinebeck.

Both member Franz Heigemeir and his wife Marianne continue to make news in the art world. Marianne's pastel "Asters" won the Lucile Blanch Award at the Fallscapes exhibit which just opened at the Woodstock Artist's Association. The Heigemeir's were featured in the "Peeks and Piques!" column of the September 2007 ART TIMES. Raymond J. Steiner wrote about visiting them for the special opening of their wonderful "Queen of the Night" vine like cactus flowers. The blooms last only a few hours and occur once a year. For those of you who like botanical names this one is epiphyllum oxypetalum. On November 10 from 1-4 p.m. there will be a one day showing of Franz's large paintings of this flower at The Dentists' Office 1733 Ulster Avenue in Lake Katrine.

The 2007 Ulster County Business Recognition Awards were announced in the Monday, October 8, 2007 Daily Freeman's Region section. Garnering Best Cultural Business was the Arts Society of Kingston. ASK was founded in 1995, has 600 members and since July 2005 has operated from its 6,000 square foot multi-arts center in the Rondout district. Kudos to ASK Executive Director and Kingston Maennerchor member Vindora Wixom for a job well done. If you haven't yet attended one of their functions I would encourage you to do so. This group of artists has worked hard to promote the arts and their efforts are contributing positively to the revitalization of the Rondout.

Two rugs hooked by member Hildegard Edling can be found in a new rug hooking book, THE CREATIVE HOOKER by Jessie A. Turbayne. Both rugs are in the section titled "To Delight Any Child" and are titled "Gingerbread" and "Hare Brained Idea."

Congratulations to everyone on being recognized for their talents and hard work.

New York State
Sängerbund

The German American Choruses from around New York State gathered in Binghamton, New York to celebrate the 34th Sängerfest on 9, 10, 11 June 2006. We were rewarded with many unique opportunities to renew old friendships and we formed new ones while pursuing our common love of music through German Culture, Song, and Gemütlichkeit.

Congratulations and Well Done to the German Club of Binghamton for successfully hosting this triennial event. Also to the Music Directors, Adjudicators, and the Bundes Music Committee lead by Gail Miller and Helga Nowak-Razey for their hard work and dedication. Herzlichen Glückwunsch! und Gut gemacht! to the First Prize winners of the competitive singing events:
<> Buffalo Schwaben Chor Ladies Chorus
<> Buffalo Schwaben Chor Mixed Chorus 1st Class
<> Kingston Maennerchor & Damenchor Mixed Chorus 2nd Class
       <> Syracuse Liederverein Men's Chorus
<> Syracuse Liederverein Overall Best Wanderpreis

What is the New York State Sängerbund?

As German-speaking immigrants settled around the state, they brought with them a love of choral singing and formed choruses like those back in their heimat. In 1897 twenty-two choruses pledged to support each other, encourage competitive singing, and advocate camaraderie. Thus the sängerbund was founded.

This host association is the umbrella organization uniting German choruses from throughout New York State. Our mission is to promote and advance German culture, heritage, and tradition through music and song to communities all over the state. We meet these objectives in several ways:

Encourage and support local concerts, festivals, and celebrations of traditional Germanic culture and heritage.

Promote the triennial statewide competitive singing festival known as a Sängerfest. The Sängerfest comprises three days of concerts, dances, and competitive choral singing events.

Distribute grants for German scholarship, youth choral programs, and funding for public concerts and community education.

Our only sources of income are contributions from the local choruses and endowments directly to the NYSSB Memorial Fund for use in grants and scholarship.

If you have a loved one, parent or grandparent who emigrated from Germany, Austria, or Switzerland and would like to remember them in a special way; please send your memorial gift to the New York State Sängerbund c/o 201 Avon Street East Syracuse NY 13057.
